How to use this
Lay rates are yearly averages — actual output is very seasonal. In northern latitudes, daylight hours drop below the 14-hour threshold hens need for peak laying, so winter output can fall 25–40%.
Production also declines each year after the first. A 20% drop year-two is typical for standard breeds; heritage birds often lay for more years but at lower rates overall.
Formula
eggs_per_year = flock × breed_rate
winter_weekly = peak_weekly × (1 − winter_drop)
year2 = eggs_per_year × (1 − year2_drop)
